Welcome!

We are an organization coming together for a positive social and cultural exchange. We are a non-profit and non-political organization. Please consider this and respect these terms of service on our various forums.

Our Mission and Purpose

The Kansas City Cherokee Community (KCCC) is dedicated to Cherokee history, culture, heritage, tradition, and fellowship. We are a non-political, non-profit Native American organization whose members reside outside the boundaries of the Cherokee Nation. We have come together based on our shared history and heritage, and out of an interest in the continuation of and a love for the Cherokee People and Nations. It is critically important that we find innovative ways to retain Cherokee people in stronger ties of culture and responsible citizenship. We believe the concept of new “towns” is one way to achieve this goal.

Sheryl Monteil

I am married, have 3 children and live in Odessa, Missouri. I would like to be on the Board of Directors for the Kansas City Cherokee Community because not only do I have a background in nonprofit leadership but also I was a member of the interim board and played a part in creating the group in Kansas City.  I was the secretary/records keeper for the Interim board and worked hard to start the Kansas City Cherokee Community; I kept all records of official meetings and helped organize the kick-off event.  I want to further the presence of the Cherokee in Kansas City as well as be a part of the decision-making process and future direction of the organization.    I feel that I can contribute greatly with my background and experience and would be a good candidate for the board because I am familiar with the issues we have faced thus far. Please vote for me so that I can continue to make a difference in the Metro area and further the mission of the Kansas City Cherokee Community.

Brenda Smith

My Cherokee blood is by virtue of descending from John and Katie Ward through three of their children.  Living the first ten years of my life (which began in 1940) in Oklahoma, my assumption was that everyone in the world was aware of their aboriginal origins;  I was later dismayed to learn that some were not fortunate to appreciate the special feeling of being connected to the earth as were the people in pre-development times.  It is important that those of us who are proud of our Cherokee family be together and attempt to ease the lives of our own and other less fortunate people in this area, as well as maintain a correspondence with our national organization.  My experience in education, scouting, service clubs and personal interest groups has allowed me to serve in every possible office of those organizations.  It has always been my approach to keep projects moving along with good sense and as little stress as possible to achieve a successful conclusion.  I would be pleased to serve on the board.

I am a member of the Cherokee Nation. My registration will be under the last name of Reynolds, which is my birth name. I am writing this letter in response to the request for self-nomination to the Greater Kansas City Cherokee Society Board.

My civic involvement has been a constant commitment to include Jaycees, Sertoma, Chairman of the Liberty Community Christmas Tree, Liberty Sports and Recreation Board, Liberty City Councilman and an appointment to the Clay County Tax Increment Finance Committee.   Currently I am in the last year of a ten year progression to be the Potentate (CEO) of the Ararat Shrine of Kansas City.

I will reference my more recent involvements with Shrine International. I have been tasked to coordinate an array of projects and fundraising efforts, from swap meets to car shows, dances, parties, dinners and most recently I was responsible for coordinating the effort to bring the “Shrine Circus” to Kansas City for its 75th year. That project required that I negotiate and contract the Circus Promoter, Municipal Auditorium, the electricians, the stage hands and all the food and novelties for a four day, nine performance event.

I was born and raised in Tahlequah, OK. I am a tribal member of the Cherokee Nation. I have a Cherokee owned and operated business which I have been running here in Kansas City for over twenty years. I was fortunate to be raised around the Cherokee people.

I look forward to working with the Cherokee people to get a community established here in Kansas City.

Nikki Haney

I am a 29 year old stay at home mother of a beautiful five year old daughter. I have been working as a secretary at a local hospital for the last two years and have lots of customer service experience. I have been lucky to be raised around the Cherokee language and culture.

As a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha at Emporia State University, I was in the Big Brothers/Big Sister organization which I was a Big Sister to a young Cherokee girl whose father wasn’t around. Along with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, I have volunteered for Special Olympics and Race for the Cure.

As a young Cherokee Woman living out of the fourteen Cherokee counties, I know how difficult it is to try to stay connected with the Cherokee Nation in Tahlequah, OK. I want to be your resource for your Cherokee Community. I want to work on bringing knowledge, culture, healthy lifestyles, and language to the Cherokee people in Kansas City.

I would like to first start by working on a scholarship fund for the Cherokee Community students.

I hope to help open doors for fellow Kansas City Cherokees.
